The 1980s gave nerds a space in popular culture, usually as the butt of a joke or the enemy of jocks. But there was also a strain of nerd-fear, a sense that in the near future these nerds would take over and non-nerds would be punished. Finger-Wagging

Every year, in the days leading up to Christmas, people do not fail to act like jerks. The irony is obviously lost on every person stampeding store aisles for a sale, busting down doors to snatch the last toy, and cutting off other drivers on the highway.
