Out of nowhere this song floated to the surface of my memory today. I don’t remember the last time I heard it or what jogged my brain, but “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás” may perhaps be the best song ever. Pun intended.
Apparently this is a classic Spanish 101 homework song. If anything it demonstrates the superiority of “quizás” over “perhaps” as way of hedging. Even Nat King Cole’s choppy Spanish version (1958) is better than the translation. My apologies to my namesake.
But the best versions are Bobby Capó’s original (1947) and the cover by Celia Cruz (1965). No one belts it out like Celia at the chorus. Goosebumps.
